Exciting Developments Ahead for Julia’s Community!

We’re thrilled to announce a major milestone for Julia’s Community as we partner with Wingate University to launch Julia’s Learning—a transformative educational program specifically designed for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). This fall marks the beginning of this unique journey, and we couldn’t be more excited about what’s to come!

A New Pathway for Lifelong Learning
Guided by our visionary founding director, Dr. Melanie Keel, Julia’s Learning is more than just a program—it's a community that fosters both personal and academic growth. Students in Julia’s Learning will have the opportunity to live on campus, actively engage in campus life, and develop essential skills in a supportive, integrated environment. Over the course of two years, participants will take a combination of integrated courses alongside Wingate undergraduates and specialized classes tailored to their needs.

Empowering Education

Julia’s Learning students this semester will benefit from a diverse curriculum that includes a religion course titled Food and Faith, a sociology class, and a range of other classes tailored to enhance essential life skills. These courses cover practical areas such as cooking, financial literacy, and interpersonal relationships, all designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary for independent living and personal growth.

Building a Dynamic Community
With new students joining each semester, Julia’s Learning promotes a vibrant, inclusive learning environment where participants can flourish. After the first year, students will have the opportunity to work off-campus, gaining practical experience that prepares them for meaningful employment. Upon completing the program, they will receive a certificate, which will serve as a valuable credential for future opportunities, further empowering them with the skills needed for independent living and a fulfilling life.

Leading the Way in Inclusive Education
Julia’s Learning is pioneering in its approach to inclusive education. Wingate University is the only university in the Charlotte metropolitan area, and the only private university in North Carolina, to offer a comprehensive program like Julia's Community. This groundbreaking initiative aligns with our shared commitment to creating environments that celebrate diversity, promote growth, and empower people of all abilities to thrive.

Julia’s Community: Building a Broader Vision
Julia’s Learning is just one piece of a larger vision. As a key initiative under Julia’s Community, it reflects our broader mission to provide comprehensive services for people with IDD, encompassing educational, residential, and employment opportunities on college campuses. Founded by Bob and Lori Spence, inspired by their daughter Julia’s journey, Julia’s Community is dedicated to filling the gaps in resources and support for families like theirs. We aim to create spaces where people with IDD can live, work, and play with greater autonomy and a sense of belonging.

A Visionary Leader at the Helm
Under the guidance of Dr. Melanie Keel, students in Julia’s Learning will gain more than just academic knowledge; they will develop essential life skills, cultivate social connections, and participate fully in campus life. By learning alongside their peers, students will become part of a vibrant community that encourages growth, empathy, and understanding.
