Discover What’s New This Fall at

Back to School, Back to Fun!

The fall semester is off to an incredible start at Julia’s Learning, and our newest cohort of students has been busy diving into all the opportunities that come with life on campus at Wingate University.

From the first day back, our students have been engaging in both academics and activities that foster independence, wellness, and connection. Here’s a glimpse of what’s been happening this semester.

Wellness is at the heart of what we do. This semester, students are staying active through our physical therapy program, where they strengthen mobility and practice exercises that support their independence. Yoga classes are helping students build balance, mindfulness, and focus, while basketball offers the perfect chance to practice teamwork, communication, and sportsmanship. Whether in the gym, on the court, or in the studio, these activities give our students the tools to care for their bodies, reduce stress, and experience the joy of movement together.

Life on campus means endless opportunities to connect. During Welcome Week, our students joined the New Horizons Festival hosted by the Bulldog Activities Resource Committee (BARC), where they enjoyed music, activities, and a true celebration of community. They also explored the Wingate street fair, discovering ways to get involved, meet new friends, and connect with organizations that spark their interests.

One of the highlights of this fall is our visit to the Wingate Fire Department, where students are meeting firefighters, learning about fire safety, exploring the equipment, and gaining a better understanding of how emergencies are handled—all while experiencing the dedication of these everyday heroes.

We believe joy and social experiences are just as important as academics. This fall, our students are making memories at a dazzling magic show, bowling nights, late nights at McGee, campus scavenger hunts, and convocation. They’ve also joined the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) kickoff, enjoyed gym sessions, and had plenty of fun at a late-night round of putt-putt—just a glimpse of the many opportunities helping them build confidence, connection, and community.

Creating Inclusive Pathways, Together

Every class, every activity, and every outing at Julia’s Community is designed to prepare students for fuller, more independent lives. We’re so proud of how our Julia’s Learning students are embracing this journey, and we’re grateful to the families, advocates, and supporters who walk alongside us.

Community Shout Out: Holy Angels on Good Morning America

At Julia’s Community, we know how powerful it is when individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities are given the chance to shine. That’s why we’re thrilled to celebrate our neighbors at Holy Angels, who were recently featured on Good Morning America’s “My Kind of Town” segment.

ABC News’ Will Ganss visited Cherubs Café, a Holy Angels–sponsored business in downtown Belmont that celebrates abilities and provides meaningful opportunities for individuals who are differently abled. The café helps participants gain life skills, achieve purposeful work, and experience belonging in a supportive community.

For nearly 70 years, Holy Angels has been providing compassionate care and opportunities made possible through the generosity of its supporters. Their story reflects the same values we hold at Julia’s Community—empowering students to live, learn, and thrive through inclusive opportunities both on and off campus.
